The Joint Ethnic Components Committee of Kirkuk in the Council of Representatives asks for compromises among the ethnic groups over the disputes on Kirkuk.

The committee, which is dedicated to Kirkuk disputes and resolving them, resumed its work after six months of halt.

Shaxawan Abdullah, a Kurdish member of the committee, told KirkukNow that, “I can only say that the meetings have started greatly in Baghdad. Important points on Kirkuk have been discussed. There is a general understanding among the members. We will continue the meeting until we reach an agreement to normalize the situation of the city.”

Abdullah’s optimism is at a time when officials of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) were supposed to return to Kirkuk and the party was also supposed to be handed over its headquarters at the order of the former prime minister, Adil Abdul-Mahdi. However, neither of the decisions was implemented.

“Our demands are legal and fall within the frame of the constitution, so I do not want to talk about the content of the demands in details,” said Abdullah, not revealing specifics of the negotiations the committee has had.

He spoke on the stances of Arab and Turkmen of the city and said that, “Arab and Turkmen components are compromising and we have common points.”

Kurds have three members in the committee and Arabs and Turkmen each have two members.
