Police arrest man charged with sexually assaulting daughter

A 45-year-old man has been arrested by Kirkiuk Police for allegedly sxuallly abusing his 18-year-old daughter.

A source within Kirkuk Police, who wished to remain unnamed, told KirkukNow that on 13 September, the daugther of the accused man went to the police in Kirkuk’s Domiz area to file a complaint against him for “raping” her.

The source added that “The police in Domiz immediately opened an investigation. According to the girl, her father started abusing her when she was only 10 and took her virginity.”

The girl has a sister and two brothers. Their mother has cancer and lives with their grandmother.

According to the police investigation, the girl has said: “Today [13 September] my father wanted to sexually assault my sister who is 22. But she didn’t allow it and screamed. My father got scared and ran away. Then I went to the police.”

The father has been arrested by a court order and will have to appear before a judge soon.

Last week there was wide public outrage after two sisters aged 17 and 19 were found dead in Chamchamal District. Their father is the main suspect in the case, but he has been in hiding.

According to statistics from the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, there have been more than 5,000 cases of domestic violence in the first six months of 2020.

Last week another case of a father allegedly raping his 13-year-old daughter was sent to court.

A lawyer told KirkukNow on the mentioned cases that “the court will not take any decision before all the girls and men are medically examined.”
